What understanding do modern scholars (read post G. Dalman) demonstrate regarding how the Old Testament believers viewed the Holy Spirit both in revelation and in their eschatological hope? (I'm working on Mark's recording of Jesus' baptism.) Thanks!
Perhaps to clarify: to go about this from a Biblical theological perspective, what would the people of Jesus' day have understood about the Spirit descending on Jesus?
It begs the question, did the people Of His day know that the Spirit descended on Him? It seems that only Christ saw the Spirit "like a dove." Their understanding concerning the Spirit would have been limited to prophetic promises, such as Malachi's declaration of Pentecost. Paul shows how the ministration of the Spirit be rather more glorious, which was reserved for the gospel dispensation.
