I have always been curious how a language evolves.

Can anyone recommend a short essay or other online resource/s that explains, with examples, how something like the oldest English (is this Beowolf?) ended up turning out to be English of 2016? I can understand a micro-evolution of language but not really macro...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Perfect!!!! Thank you

The Study of Writing by Gelb is pretty good for the history of alphabets.
As for the English Language, I'd just look up the Wiki articles and their references as I do not know a whole lot other than its influences because of the history (Celtic followed by Germanic invasion, followed by a Norman-French invasion).
