The Punishment for Adultery in the OT.

Simple questions.

I've heard people say that death is the "maximum" punishment for adultery. This implies there are lesser punishment options. Where do they get this idea?

Is it from what Joseph planned concerning Mary before the angel explained her pregnancy to him?

EDIT: Thought about it a little bit more. I'm thinking maybe divorce is the "lesser punishment", for when there is not evidence supporting otherwise, such as two witnesses.

I thought that one option available to Joseph was to have Mary quietly put away, like in a version of Jewish nunnery?
