Has anyone seen the new movie about the apostle Paul, and if so, was it any good? Christian movies are often cheesy with bad acting, etc. but if it is a pretty good then I will try to find it.

I haven't personally seen it but I have seen many comments online that say it is fairly good from those who may or may not be christians, to some who say it is completely inaccurate (and those were said by people who seemed to be christians)... I still my go see it just to see for myself.

Jim Caviezel on why he takes these sort of roles:

I saw it and liked it very much. It was put out by a major studio, Mandelay Bay Pictures, and had good production values. The acting was very good and it was not at all "cheesy." It was a strong reminder of a time when it cost something to be a Christian. "I will not offer the Lord that which costs me nothing," said David. Those early Christians certainly did not do that.

Don:

Thanks for that review, which means a good deal coming from you.

I would not otherwise be minded to see such, but this thread has made it clear that, given all the particulars, it may be worth seeing.

Peace,
Alan

That's weird, and it does little to make me want to see the film.

It also says Caviezel is starring in a sequel to The Passion of the Christ? What on earth will that even be about?

Regarding The Passion Movie. Here’s a short and good take on it by Rev. Angus Stewart from PRCA. It was a TV interview a few good years ago.

I believe it’s supposed to be about Christ’s time on earth between his resurrection and ascension.

It's interesting that the Church of Ireland bishop completely ignored the stated aims of the filmmakers. That happy ignorance was the response of a lot of Protestants when the film came out.

I do not think that quite the same concerns need arise with a film about the Apostle Paul. However, I would still be cautious, since there evidently some who will take the opportunity to promote certain unbiblical viewpoints, not to mention egregious violations of the Second Commandment.

Zach asked about 2nd commandment violations, which is a great question/request. But let me warn my brothers and sisters that's not the only thing you need to be concerned with nor I suspect the greatest thing you need to be concerned with. We often forget about the 3rd commandment.

Q. 112. What is required in the third commandment?
A. The third commandment requires, that the name of God, his titles, attributes, ordinances, the word, sacraments, prayer, oaths, vows, lots, his works, and whatsoever else there is whereby he makes himself known, be holily and reverently used in thought, meditation, word, and writing; by an holy profession, and answerable conversation, to the glory of God, and the good of ourselves, and others.

Q. 113. What are the sins forbidden in the third commandment?
A. The sins forbidden in the third commandment are, the not using of God's name as is required; and the abuse of it in an ignorant, vain, irreverent, profane, superstitious, or wicked mentioning or otherwise using his titles, attributes, ordinances, or works, by blasphemy, perjury; all sinful cursings, oaths, vows, and lots; violating of our oaths and vows, if lawful; and fulfilling them, if of things unlawful; murmuring and quarreling at, curious prying into, and misapplying of God's decrees and providences; misinterpreting, misapplying, or any way perverting the word, or any part of it, to profane jests, curious or unprofitable questions, vain janglings, or the maintaining of false doctrines; abusing it, the creatures, or anything contained under the name of God, to charms, or sinful lusts and practices; the maligning, scorning, reviling, or any wise opposing of God's truth, grace, and ways; making profession of religion in hypocrisy, or for sinister ends; being ashamed of it, or a shame to it, by unconformable, unwise, unfruitful, and offensive walking, or backsliding from it.

As I've thought about the third commandment, I have found that movies that portray the Bible in any fashion distort and fall far short of keeping and honoring God's name and word. This is why I do not watch movies that look at people from the Bible (Esther, Paul, Moses, etc.). I believe it is a breaking of the 3rd commandment.

I suppose that makes sense. That's not a lot of time to work with, though. One wonders how many Roman Catholic myths will have been included in the script.

Actually, that’s a lot more time than the original covered, which mostly took place over just the last few days before and leading up to his crucifixion. And I’m sure you’re right that this one will be just as loaded with RC myths, if not more so.

My memory must be fading. I saw the original when it first came out, and I seem to remember at least one or two scenes supposedly from Jesus' childhood, and one with him working in carpentry. Maybe those were just flashbacks. In any case, I have no plans to see the film again!

Yes there were a couple of flashbacks, including one to the time when Jesus apparently invented the dining room table.
