Bad Things Happen When Listening To 90s Music

This sounds really weird, but I'll throw it out there. When I was really young, I listened to some 90s alternative music, and it kind of became a part of me and I associate it with a good time in my life (elementary school days). I don't like or wouldn't listen to any of the songs that are explicit or have trashy lyrics, etc., but I still do have a taste for certain songs of that era that help me capture my childhood.

But here's the weird thing. The few times in the past few years I have went back to reminisce with 90s alternative music, it seems like right around that time some really bad things have happened in my life. I'm wondering if this is a superstitious coincidence or if God is disciplining me somehow in order that I stay away from it for some reason.

What are your thoughts? Thanks!

What are your thoughts?

Really? I think 90s music is great!

One could mention many things but in the 1790s, Haydn composed his last twelve symphonies (the "London" symphonies). Magnificent!

And one could say so many things about the 1890s (Puccini!), but for me nothing more need be said than the 2nd and 3rd Symphonies of Gustav Mahler: truly remarkable and moving music!

Those are my thoughts on 90s music!

Peace,
Alan

People associate memories and emotions with music because it is a mode of expression and remembering things. Since you had strong emotions of happiness or such in that time frame, you are sensitive to what that song means to you.

This concept is like hearing a ring tone- every time that specific song comes on, you will think the phone is ringing because you remember answering the phone when you hear it.

I believe the stuff we remember is all a part of our lives. I never want to let go of these emotions. Maybe just evolve them. Like instead of crying being solemn, etc. I don't know if you can ever really forget emotion

God isn't going to discipline you for violations of commands that are not clear from his word. What commands do you think you are transgressing?

Most of the time I don't pay much attention to lyrics. As a guitarist myself I am much more interested in the instrumentation and melodic lines of a song. This isn't such a good thing when I am playing something in the car with the kids around and I have to switch the song quickly when some profane or suggestive lyric comes along.

It sounds like you are applying at least some filters when it comes to music and rejecting the outright profane stuff. My only suggestion is think about how the music is affecting you and if it is having any kind of deteriorating affect on your spiritual life. When I am in certain moods, certain songs can affect me more negatively than normal and I choose to skip them. Sometimes it isn't the lyrics but the "feel" or "emotion" that is produced due to the condition of my heart at that moment. That is probably true of really any art form. Some needs to be rejected outright. Others you just need to be aware of your current spiritual condition. Some of that alternative stuff (you mention The Smashing Pumpkins) can get pretty dark. I tend to stay away from that but that is just me.

Great advice! Thanks so much!

Ryan, this ties in with your other thread asking whether it is bad to reminisce. As Anna Banana says, music can stimulate memories from times gone by. Because of our difference in age the popular music of the 1990s is meaningless to me. I was a child of the 1950s-'60s.

The music of the '50s stands in stark contrast to that of the '90s, in my mind. The coarsening of the culture is mirrored in the difference between the love songs, such as the 'Doo-Wop' which came out of the Northeast in the '50s, and the Rap with its explicit sexual references in the '90s.

In terms of reminiscing, my first thought upon reading that thread was the quote by the then famous Negro baseball pitcher Satchel Paige. "Don't look back, something may be gaining on you." Though I loved the music of the '60s-'70s at the time, I can't listen to it now.

My memories of being a hippie vagabond are not good ones. In the early '70s I became infatuated with the blues genre. Listening to reissue recordings of black bluesmen made in the '20s-'30s. It is interesting that some of those men/women grew to consider it 'Devils Music', and only composed/played spiritual songs from then on.

The composer of Precious Lord, Georgia Tom Dorsey being a prime example. Depending on your lifestyle at the time, reminisces and music can be a pleasant experience or a negative one. I think that will dictate our listening.

It depends on what sort of trouble you are getting into. If you are walking around like you are 2 legit to quit or have an uncontrollable urge to jump around, jump around, and get up, get up, and get down I would say it’s time to lay off the 90’s music.

Not to mention if you are chasing waterfalls or wearing your clothes backwards. That is also a sign you need to walk away from it.

Hope this helps

That's too funny.
