I've my guesses below but am not satisfied; I think the Isaiah is not really right; but what think ye? Am I missing something obvious? This for the Dickson on Lamentations sermons.
There was no nation God fought for as for them, for He went as captain and leader of them and guard. The soldiers stood by till He slew their enemies ere ever they drew a sword and when they were to pursue their enemies He broke in upon them as a mighty flood of waters [Josh. 5:13; 10:10, 11; Isa. 28:2, Deut 20:4, Judges 4:15; 2 Sam. 5:20], and taught His people sometimes such stratagems of war that their enemies were forced to acknowledge that they had a more skilled general and leader of their armies than any people under heaven. Therefore they called the gods of Israel, mighty, strong gods, out of |130| whose hands their gods were not able to deliver [cf. 1 Kings 20:23; 1 Sam. 4:8]
