Have Christians committed atrocities throughout the world?

Came across an article this morning:

https://disrn.com/news/nigerian-christian-executed-by-islamic-state-child-soldier

A brother in Christ was executed by Islamic extremists. Before being executed the murderer said something that stuck out to me.

From the article:

"This is one of the Christians from Plateau state," the boy said in Hausa, the major language in Northern Nigeria. "We want to tell all Christians that we have not forgotten what you did to our parents and grandparents. Christians all over the world must know that we will never forget their atrocities against us, until we avenge the bloodshed visited on us."

Is this accusation unwarranted? What could he be referring to?

Well the thread title was a little misleading, I was like "well of course we have committed atrocities, every group has". But I see what you're asking about. I can't say I'm aware of any particular action but considering they're Muslims they might be reffering to the crusades. But in all fairness I think both sides have their hands dirty, or bloody, on that one. But I'm not well read on that one. Plus it could have been an instance of self-defense that they initiated and warped the facts about in their head, like we have the right to kill infidels but they don't have the right to defend themselves. But that's just speculation.

You wouldn't happen to be able to recommend any good books on the crusades would you? I have always wanted to read up on it.

No like I said I'm not well read on it. My comment was based on my impression of some Muslims, who seem to have a long memory and an ethic that treats true believers as a different class of people than unbelievers (infidels) and hence as deserving less than human treatment. How else do you justify cutting someone's head off for not believing?
Although I do have a history of the Catholic church that might refer to it, but I can't look at it till later. I think I saw a YouTube video on it as well. But to you're OP that may be what they are reffering to, again I'm just speculating.

Sure. Logically speaking, it's a moot question. Psychologically and apologetically, I get what people bring it up.
Yeah. Some try to be sneaky. I’ve heard Dawkins try to drive a wedge between atheistic regimes like USSR/China and so-called secular nations.

His angle is they were a religion too, so religion kills. It's simplistic at best and downright irrational/immoral at worst. He needs to leave logic and philosophy to professionals.

I would just tell people that Yeah, Christians have sometimes done terrible things. So what? It's a logical fallacy to move from "You've done terrible things; therefore, you're argument is wrong."

Otherwise you will have to go back and forth on tu quo ques and "No True Scotsman." Best just to avoid that line of thought.

I would even admit, "Yeah, the only people until modern times who were anti-semites were guys like Abelard, and that's not good."

We burned much of the Jewish intellectual heritage in the 1200s at Notre Dame. We may have been responsible for burning the library at Alexandria, though that can't be proven either way.

Take the 3rd Ecumenical Council. It was championed by Cyril of Alexandria. It was also physically dangerous to be Cyril's opponent.

2000 years of Christ’s Power (volume 2) by Nick Needham provides a pretty good overview of the crusades in his comprehensive historical account of the church.

Marxism has left a legacy of 100,000,000 corpses.
That's terrible but so what killing people is killing people. Are you defending the Christian kills during the Crusades? That's a real question I'm not being smart alichy.

All 4 volumes seem incredibly interesting! I'll be sure to pick them up.

The one on the Middle Ages is the best. You'll want something more if you want to go deeper on the crusades.

Robert Spenser's Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, while hardly neutral, is a good start.

And while you are at it, this is a great youtube channel for stuff like this.

It’s a great read. Very comprehensive, not too in the weeds (to Bayouhugenots point) and well balanced (and respectful) in terms of all the different denominations. Each volume covers a time period and he has one more volume to write to cover the past few centuries. I’m anxiously awaiting it!

I presume he was talking about the Nigerian Civil War.

They are all very good. Obviously, given that they are surveys, not monographs there are going to be more inaccuracies and doubtful judgments here and there than there would be in the average monograph, they are still a great overview.

To the OP: most here are reading this wrong.

In the Islamic world, Americans and the West are Christian. So everything done by the West (read all wars in the middle East with Western involvement, etc.), now and throughout history, is done by Christians.

Simple as that.

Didn't think about it that way. Good point.
