...the Detroit Lions surpassed all predictions of their capacity for losing this year. They proved that no one in the NFL can even touch them for sheer consistency. I am so pleased with this team that they had a plan (or they appear to have had a plan) and they executed it beautifully. :wow: :p

Putting Jon Kitna on IR when it didn't appear that he was hurt badly enough to be out the whole season seems to have been part of this ingenious plan. At the time that was a sign to me that they were giving up on the season.

I'm a Packers fan, and I just feel terrible for the Lions, Rod Marinelli specifically. No one at all should be forced to go into Canton for being the only 0-16 team in NFL history except for Matt Millen, whom I see to be the indisputably worst GM in league history. There were not too many ridiculously bad choices he made (besides drafting WR's every year in the first round), but he was just consistently bad in all that he did. Very rarely did he make a halfway decent draft pick, trade, or free agent signing.

He did a decent job in picking coaches, but then he trapped them with a talentless pool of players. Steve Mariucci cannot be considered a bad coach -- not after looking at his track record with San Francisco -- and Rod Marinelli managed to get the Lions to 6-2 halfway through the 2007 season with that terrible group of players!

Matt Millen, and Matt Millen alone, is to be blamed for this 0-16 season, but unfortunately all the other Lions will predominantly receive the guilt. It's a shame.

Wow: I hadn't considered the repercussions in Canton, OH for Rod Marinelli... You're right, Ben. I always liked Marinelli, although the male members of my family aver unequivocally that he was a very bad coach and it was his coaching that sealed the Lions' record this year.

Marinelli going into the pro football Hall of Fame as the only 0-16 coach: that stinks. You're also right about Matt Millen - and Wm. Clay Ford, too - being responsible for this debacle.

My family and I went to the Hall of Fame in 2004, where I happened to meet the late Colts lineman Jim Parker, who also played for Ohio State, in the gift shop. Mr. Parker was then in a wheelchair; he died in 2005. He was a very pleasant gentleman. I highly recommend the NFL Hall of Fame as an outing for anyone or any family that would be remotely interested in it. It's a much more leisurely and, I would venture, well put together venue than Cooperstown, not that there's anything wrong with that. Allow about 3-4 hours to see the Hall, if you go...

Happy New Year to all here!

They are having difficulty filling the vacancy even coaches underfire such as Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett have declined invitations to interview for the head coaching opening; people are actually dreading the prospect of being hired to coach the Lions!:wow::p

Current professional football coaches in whatever capacity (down to the high school level) should tremble in their boots should they hear their phones ring and see either a 313 or a 248 area code on the caller ID. You don't even want to interview with the Lions!

So I wonder what will happen if they can't get anyone even to come here and talk to William Clay Ford and the rest of the organization. This'll be interesting.

There's no way they won't get a guy for the job. They probably won't get the best of the bunch, but there is no way they will not get a man for the job. It's an NFL head coaching job, people.

Me thinks perhaps you missed the sarcasm.

What I responded to didn't sound very sarcastic. Regardless, it's a non-issue that Detroit will have a coach next year.

Oh, I don't think it's set in stone that the Lions will be able to get someone to take the job. They have a 51-year legacy of futility, a diva for an owner and the biggest deterrent of all: this is Detroit.

If this were Cleveland, I wouldn't have any doubts that they'd have people lining up to be interviewed for the job. But no one wants to come here. Literally.

Lions coaches are hired only to be fired. Who that's otherwise employable would want a piece of that action? (I'm saying this even while putting aside my deeply ingrained inferiority complex about Detroit.)

If someone could forward this post to UGA's quarterback Matthew Stafford, I would appreciate it. He needs to come back to Georgia for his senior season and not enter the NFL draft early, where he'll wind up in Detroit.

Who are you trying to fool? The Lions are going to draft Crabtree!

That's right -- they always draft receivers! How could I be so stupid!

But even the hapless Colts -- after years of one dumb draft selection after another -- finally managed one year to pick some guy named Manning over Ryan Leaf.
