C. Matthew McMahon

Christian Preacher
John Howe (1630–1706) was an English Puritan theologian who studied at Christ’s College, Cambridge, and at Magdalen College, Oxford receiving a B.A. in 1650 and M.A. in 1652. For a time, Howe was a fellow and college chaplain at Oxford.

This newly typeset and modernized work, one of Howe’s most popular which was originally published in 1674, is taken from Psalm 37:4 “Delight thyself in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine Heart.”
More of us need to DELIGHT in God, instead of simply make Him our cosmic bell-hop! This is an awesome work to lift the Christian's soul.

I have to put in a serious plug for this work. It is a most excellent treatise and will both encourage and challenge you. I read it years ago from an old dusty copy (never checked out before me in 75 years) from the Cornell University library of all places... buy it - you will not be sorry you did so.

All of the works are created with a table of contents that is hyper linked in the document, and an active table of contents. I don't know how Amazon demonstrates sample editions. I do know that they are all created that way. All the ebooks have full navigation.

Just because I go t a little nervous....I went back to my ebook reader, opened the mobi file for the work, and yes, active navigation works great. ePub and Mobi both have a hyperlinked table of contents, and an active table. My eBook reader on the computer is Calibri. Works great for every format. When I click on TOC it pops it open on the side and I can navigate anywhere int he document. It must be an Amazon change they make on samples.

Thanks, Matthew. That's reassuring.

It was odd because other Amazon samples have had TOCs that are hyperlinked and active. I think I'll write them and ask if they are disabling these features in their samples now.

It's an important thing for them to address. The Amazon samples might be prejudicing the actual quality of a publisher's work.

This sounds like it might anticipate some of Piper's theses in Desiring God. It will be interesting to compare and contrast the two books.

I think you may want to reverse it in terms of anticipation.

John Howe (1630–1706) vs. John Piper (1946- )

But no, Piper's book does not follow the puritans (he mostly follows ideas from Edwards). Piper's book actually tries to rewrite the Shorter Catechism's first question.

That's why I thought Howe's book,, referred to as "it" might ANTICIPATE Piper

That may be one of the differences. But how significant will that difference be compared to the substance of both cases? I'll be flying across Canada later this week and will read and compare.
