Need Ruth Commentary suggestions... quickly!

I'm about to preach Ruth.

I already own Block (NAC), Hubbard (NICOT), and Younger (NIVAC).

I know Longman's recommendations. What are yours?

Ruth is a great book. I had the privilege to teach it a couple years ago. I can't remember which commentary was most helpful. I would lean toward one that leans on a redemptive historical approach rather than overly pastoral finding moral lessons in every hero. I do remember my main take on the book. The theme of the book is "seed".

Naomi leaves the city of bread(seed) in search of bread(seed).
When she leaves she does though have seed(husband and two sons) capable of providing her with children and or grandchildren and accompanying protection.
She returns to the city of bread(seed) to find bread(seed) has been restored
However she is now without seed(males in the family) therefore destined to hardship
the scenes are now heavily set in the context of grain(seed)
God provides for their literal need grain(seed)
And more importantly provides for Naomi's need of offspring(seed) Note these both appear in the same seen in the imagery of Ruth leaving with grain(seed) strapped to her belly.
Obed is born ( I see this as the main point in the book) It all points to the sovereign God working out history providing for Naomi through the birth of a son the very grandfather of David father of our Lord. Also note inclusion in the very line of Christ of Ruth the gentile. A foreshadowing of the inclusion.

just my 2 cent recollection of the book. Although we find Ruth extraordinarily faithful and Boaz a righteous man I tend not to see old testament narrative in general as a gold mine of moral lesson nuggets. Ruth as a book can be over mined. Have fun studying it.

Well, I received my commentaries in the mail...

I have to say that Hubbard's offering in the NICOT series really is all it is cracked up to be. Simply wonderful.

I confess that I've never really cared for Ruth - I always thought of its inclusion in the Bible as God throwing women a bone.

BUT... After doing some study, I tell you that my attitude has changed... I am very excited about preaching through it!
