An interesting quote from Calvin, commenting on the Genesis 12:1 and God's call to Abraham to leave everything behind.

"If we desire to follow God with constancy, it behoves us carefully to meditate on all the inconveniences, all the difficulties, all the dangers which await us; that not only a hasty zeal may produce fading flowers, but that from a deep and well-fixed root of piety, we may bring forth fruit in our whole life." Calvin's Commentaries, Vol. 1, pg. 344.

It's easy to get discouraged when we are surprised by the trials of life. But if we understand beforehand the promised cost and hope of following Christ, and that trials of various kinds will come through every phase of life until death, then we can better prepare ourselves mentally to endure them and be fruitful through them.

Calvin's prayer on Habakkuk 3:14–19

Grant, Almighty God, that as we do not cease daily to provoke your wrath against us, and as the hardness and obstinacy of our flesh is so great, that it is necessary for us to be in various ways afflicted—O grant that we may patiently bear your chastisements, and under a deep feeling of sorrow flee to your mercy; and may we in the meantime persevere in the hope of that mercy which you have promised, and which has been once exhibited toward us in Christ, so that we may not depend on the earthly blessings of this perishable life, but relying on your Word may proceed in the course of our calling, until we shall at length be gathered into that blessed rest which is laid up for us in heaven, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
