Communion tokens (paper or metal) were used by the reformers and puritans of old for the elders to confirm that persons coming to Christ in the Supper had made adequate preparation thereunto (1 Cor. 11:27-32; 2 Cor. 13:5; etc.) in the sight of the Church.
