Alright - Here is the 2017 Big Bowl Bash.
The format:
The 40 games must be selected by 12:00 EST, December 16, kickoff time for the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. This INCLUDES your selection for the National Championship Game - which must be one of the two you pick for the winners of the National Semifinals.
I have decided that the Hawaii Bowl, which is played on the Lord's Day, 12/24, is NOT part of the roster of games to be selected.
Games are sorted into Tiers in which:
Games up through December 24 are worth 1 point.
Most games between December 26 and January 1 are worth 2 points
The Non-Playoff New Years Six games are worth 4 points
The Semifinals, AND the Final are worth 8 points
I did not increase the Final to 16 points because you gain a significant advantage in your Finals selection by correctly selecting both semifinals. Making the final worth 16 points would vastly over-rate that one game relative to everything else, as a result, and essentially make it very likely that no matter how poorly one does with the other 37 games, if you pick all three of the playoff games correctly you're essentially going to win the contest... and that doesn't seem appropriate.
I have tested this and the system gives a good balance between the games up to the playoffs and the playoff games themselves - so that both are meaningful, but the playoff games are a significant (but not dominant) key to victory.
If two or more players have the same total after the playoffs I have a 3-tiered tiebreak system
1) The Championship game selection (1 or 0)
2) The semifinal games (2, 1, or 0)
3) The total number of games correctly selected (equal weighting for all 41 games)
4) Number of regular season weekly victories
This should be sufficient. The system is not terribly likely to generate a tie in the first place, but if it does, these 4 levels of tiebreaker seem never to fail after extensive testing.
