C. Matthew McMahon

Christian Preacher
When I started Puritan Publications in 2005, we decided to make all the books in hardback form. Initially, I was thinking that hardbacks last longer, so, even with shorter books, I decided to make them in hardback.

So, in thinking about keeping costs as low as possible, to get the most exposure for these great works that I can, I decided to publish all the books we had originally done in hardback form into a paperback book.

That makes all these works a good 40% to 70% cheaper than originally published.

The distributor does such a good job in making the paperbacks, that I thought a general 50% off a book would be more appealing. (Most of the books are 50% off their cost as a paperback.)

On top of this, we have updated a few of these works to create paperback versions that are more updated. For example, Jeremiah Burroughs' work, Jerusalem's Glory Breaking Forth into the World was originally published in a form that changed the language very little, to nothing. Yet, to make it more readable, and more helpful, we've taken time to update that work in its entirety. It's an excellent work about the way the church "ought to be" in the world.

In addition to that, a good dozen or so of them paperback books now have updated covers and formatting which make reading easier.

Keep in mind, all this surrounds the printed paperback copies of all these works.

The following books are now in paperback form at a cost 40% to 70% off their original hardback cost. Go to our Printed Book Page for Puritan Publications to see them as a list. (The last 38 works there are all newly published paperbacks.)

I'm going to take a couple of posts and plug some important works that you should have in your library (paperback versions).

First is William Spurstowe's The Wells of Salvation Opened. (Paperback Print)

This work is one of the most valuable Puritan works we've done . It comprises the biblical teaching on the promises of God. It is, by far, the best treatment outside of Scripture on the subject (although Nicholas Byfield's work is a practical gem on the same subject). Spurstowe uses 2 Peter 1:4 as his main text, “Whereby are given to us exceeding great and precious promises…” Every Christian is to stand firm on the promises that God has laid down in Scripture concerning his covenant and his Son Jesus Christ. There is a right use and a wrong use to these promises and Spurstowe, in a gentle and amiable style leads us through them all in order to enrich our faith in Christ, and cause us to esteem the value of Christ and His grace greater than anything else in the world.

Dr. Joel Beeke said, “it may well be the best book ever written on the promises of God."

How convinced are you about the manner and mode of worship?

Worship to God is of primary importance. God has determined what that worship should be like, and what will honor Him. The Reformed Presbyterian Ministers of the 19th century in America have brought together in one volume a fantastic compilation of the best information in their day about what is to be used in singing during corporate worship. The Scottish ministers shortly after, having received this work in their own day well after its first publication, heartily recommended it in their multiple introductory notes. The book deals with the application of the Regulative Principle in singing to God during corporate worship. The theological outcome of such a study dictates the manner in which a Christian may lawfully WORSHIP THE LIVING GOD. We are not speaking about secondary issues, or non-essentials. We are speaking about WORSHIP. The topic is profoundly practical and will press Christians to consider their current position on worship, and the singing of Psalms.

This is one of the best works written by a puritan to aid the bible student on the important subject of church government. It is a masterful work (actually, all of Daniel Cawdrey's works are quite masterful.)

Cawdrey, a prolific Westminsterian writer and scholar on Church Government, explains how to heal the divisions in Christ’s church. Dr. Edmund Calamy called Daniel Cawdrey, “a man of great consideration, eminently learned, and a noted member of the assembly of divines.” He preached sometimes to the members of parliament…was ejected from his living at Great Billing, and separated from his friends and his flock by the act of uniformity, after having labored, for the edification of his people in that place, for 37 years.”

This treatise was one of Cawdrey’s most popular defenses. Check out the paperback version here at my Puritan Publications Spotlight Page.

Another great book you should read is Peter Ramus and the Educational Reformation of the 16th Century.

People have asked, “What is Ramean Logic?” The Puritans were “Ramists” in their logical approach. This turn of the century work highlights the educational reformer Peter Ramus and his contributions in logic to the Reformation and Puritanism. A MUST read…

It is unfortunate that only this one work by William Pinke exists. William Pinke, A.M. (1599–1629) was a learned puritan divine and known as an excellent classical scholar and linguist.
He died at the age of 30 years old.

The Trial of a Christian's Sincere love to Christ (paperback version).

This work was Pinke’s most popular and well-received treatise on the sincere love of the true Christ to Jesus Christ. He works from three texts, “If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema maranatha,” (1 Corinthians 16:22). “Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity,” (Ephesians 6:24). And, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple,” (Luke 14:26). He covers loving the Lord Jesus Christ at his coming, what a true Christian is, having a sincere love to Christ, and our highest love to Christ.

Richard Byfield (1598–1664), was a Calvinistic and Reformed Puritan, an ejected minister, and sat on the Westminster Assembly.

“The Light of Faith and Way of Holiness” (paperback version) is a Christian manual showing the path the Christian must take in order to believe, strive, earnestly contend and suffer in the present age in which he lives for the glory of God and the praise of Jesus Christ.

Byfield teaches how one is to live in all estates, conditions and degrees of relation according to a true and real biblical faith. He works from the text, “And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall enter in it,” (Isa. 35:8).

This is not only a fabulous work, but a classic puritan work, that is applicable for all ages of Christian growth.

The Regulative Principle says, God alone determines the manner in which sinners are to approach him. Not many churches and denominations believe this today.
They will tell you they believe it, but in practice, they are far removed from the principle.

The Use of Instruments of Music in Christian Corporate Worship Indefensible, by James Begg

This work by James Begg applies this Principle and much scriptural proof to demonstrate that the use of musical instruments in the worship of God’s church, is, as Begg states, “indefensible.” Begg begins his work quoting Calvin who says, “In Popery they employed organs and many other such ludicrous things, by which the Word and worship of God are exceedingly profaned.” Begg continues this sentiment throughout the entire work which is a powerful argument against contemporary worship in modern churches – even those that “say” they stand on the Bible and the Westminster Confession. Chapters in this work include: The Scriptural Principle Which Regulates Christian Worship; The Inconsistent Use of Musical Instruments in the House of God Under the New Testament; The Impact of Art on Religion; Dancing in Worship; The Westminster Divines on the Greek term “psalmos,” and much more!

Do you adore God? Adoring God is one of the great duties of the Christian. How well do you delight in him? How much do you adore him?

A Treatise of Delighting in God, by John Howe

John Howe (1630–1706) was an English Puritan theologian and gifted Reformed Preacher.

This newly typeset and modernized work, one of Howe’s most popular which was originally published in 1674, is taken from Psalm 37:4 “Delight thyself in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine Heart.” Howe demonstrates the object to be delighted in (God), the access sinful men have to God (through Christ), and how God is to be considered man’s delight. He shows that the soul must delight in God, and that proper instrument of conformity arises from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then, he gives a number of directions for improving in religion, of motives and principles of a religious life, and directions on having a sole dependence on God. This points the sinner to a holy, consistent practice of delighting and adoring in God.
