If, as a high school student or a college undergrad, you are one of the half-century of students to have used the Norton Anthology of English Literature (first edition: 1962), you might be interested to know that its founding editor, M. H. Abrams, will turn 100 on July 23. A Professor of English at Cornell for more than forty years (beginning in 1945), he has authored or edited many books, but the Norton Anthology is easily his best known.

In an interview once, he explained why he decided to major in English at Harvard (BA, 1934; MA, 1937; Ph.D, 1940) during the Depression: "There were no jobs in most fields then. So, I figured that, if I were going to starve, I'd rather starve doing something I liked than starve doing something I hated."

A very happy birthday to M. H. Abrams!
