Christian Preacher
Sometimes you look at your bookshelf or library, and notice all the books you haven't read, and say, "What am I going to read this month?" There are books on election, books on the Spirit, books on the Christian walk or self-examination...lots of choices.
But sometimes, you just need a book to describe and teach you about Jesus Christ. Not teach you about Christ in some abstract way, but to teach and remind us about who Christ is and what he does. This work by William Strong is a gem in this regard. Because he teaches us about Jesus Christ as God's Shepherd to his people.

Jesus Christ God’s Shepherd – by William Strong (d. 1654)

William Strong, A.M. (d. 1654) was an active Westminster Puritan and Calvinistic minister. Obadiah Sedgwick, another assembly member, said of him, “…he was so plain in heart, so deep in judgment, so painful in study, so frequent, exact, and laborious in preaching, and, in a word, so eminently qualified for all the duties of the ministerial office, that he did not know his equal.”

Strong takes great pain and careful thought to demonstrate that Jesus Christ is God’s Shepherd from Zechariah 13:7, “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of Hosts.” Three main properties are explored showing Christ as a Shepherd. He is, 1) The Shepherd of souls, 2) The Great Shepherd and 3) The Good Shepherd. Strong shows how Christ is appointed by God to this position, and how Christ rules and feeds God’s flock in the position knowing He must give an account of them. In this office Christ as a Shepherd lies in six things: 1) He seeks the flock, 2) He feeds them, 3) He takes care of them, 4) He heals them, 5) He defends them, and 6) He guides them.

Then Strong demonstrates that Christ is God’s fellow, or man. He is shown to be God’s fellow Laborer, and due to Him is honor, glory and worship. Strong does this in order to bear up the saint’s spirits to believe in Christ and ground their faith on Christ alone. This is an insightful and powerful treatise to encourage Christians to trust in Christ, their one true Shepherd.
