There is a new translation of Augustine's remarkable book, "Confessions." It is appearing in the famed Loeb Classical Library series. The translator is Carolyn Hammond, a scholar associated with Caius College at Cambridge University.

Volume 1, covering Books 1-8, was published in July. Volume 2 (Books 9-13) will be published in 2015. All Loeb Classical Library volumes (no matter how thick or thin they may be) are $26. Volume 1 is available on Amazon (natch) for $21.67.

Hammond's fresh translation replaces that of William Watts, a translation from the 17th century (slightly tinkered with) that was already creaky and musty when it was published in the Loeb series in 1912, as one of the first batch of volumes published in the series that year. So, after 102 years, it's long past time that "Confessions" appeared in the Loebs in a new, from-scratch, fresh translation.

The last translation of "Confessions" was that of the late Henry Chadwick, published in 1991 (and as a "World's Classics" paperback in 1992).
