Those who have followed this story know that the evidence is very steep. The fact that he was in a position of authority in his church makes for even greater disappointment. If he is guilty of these crimes one can only wonder why he would not confess and repent.
Didn't the Judge in the case enter a plea of Not Guilty in his stead? Rader didn't issue a statement but remained silent so the Judge had to assume Not Guilty. Is that correct?

Maybe Fred can illuminate, but I don't think there is much of a difference whether or not Rader spoke. Obviously the events had been arranged and channeled through his lawyer. Point being, the judge would not and could not have entered a "not guilty" plea if Rader wanted to confess.
Sure he can. Just look at the Lindy English case. If the judge believes there are any mitigating circumstances or that he might not be mentally competent, he not only can, but must, enter a plea of not guilty on the behalf of the defendant.
