In 1984, Hubert Biallowons and Ferdinand Herget interviewed Karl Rahner in Augsburg. Among the statements in that interview this one caught my eye:

The ultimate paradox of human existence consists basically in this: one must love selflessly and may not seek one's own happiness, if one would be happy. The true paradox of a genuinely fulfilled human life consists in this: one must adore God for his own sake, unless you want to fall into the emptiness of disillusionment and ultimate nothingness.​

This is hardly a unique thought (it can be partially paralleled in George Orwell, for instance), but it is well said. The chief end of man is to glorify God, and there is no enjoyment apart from that. Our own good is found in subordinating our own good to God's glory.
