... But after you have with your reason and mind made a general survey of all societies there is none more grave, more dear then that which each one of us hath with his Country; Parents are dear, Children, Friends, familiars are dear; But our native Country alone taketh all these within her compass, for which what good man would doubt to die, could his death serve her for good? So much the more detestable is their barbarity, who have with all kind of wickedness rent asunder their native Country, and both are and have been exercised in overturning her from the very foundation.

If a Patriot spoke so of his Country, a Citizen so of his Republic, what should the Christian born, baptized, and bred in Scotland think and say, if he have been born there not only to this mortal, but to that immortal and everlasting life: No children on earth have better reason to say, We are not ashamed of our Mother, and it were to be wished that the saying were reciprocally true. ...

It is interesting to think how the anti patriot philosophy in our country/churches today may contravene the fifth commandment to a degree.

We asked Tim Keller (or rather, his intern) this on twitter: Why is love for the City good but love for the nation bad?

Is #NewYorkFirst really compatible with the message of Jesus? If we give public expression to our desires to #MakeNewYorkGreatAgain, have we not become blood and soil, New York Nationalists? Surely, we may as well just declare New York to be the Fourth Reich? After all, #OrangeManBad has a tower in that city. ;)
