My church cell group went to see "I Can Only Imagine" Friday night, and thought that it had a powerful message about how God can use bad things for His purposes, and how the love of God can transform lives.

I have not, though some from my congregation have and were making comments on social media that they liked it very much. Money is tight right now, and I can only afford to go to one movie this month which will be Paul, Apostle of Christ. That looks really good.

I’m a little hesitant. If it’s as bad as the song, it will be awful.

I saw the previews while in my movie, and it did look very good.

The song is the most popular Christian song yet produced though.

How is that relevant? The song is silly because the Bible is pretty clear as to what we will do when we come into the presence of the Lord.

Argumentum ad populum is not how we determine good, though, David. As popular as much of "Christian" music seems to be, much of it is terribly juvenile. While you may not like it, listen to the Eagles or Little Big Town's songwriting and singing. It is top notch. Good storytelling and excellent execution. "Christian" music? Meh........

That song though speaks to many of us, as we are able to identify with the singer with his heart felt emotional response to seeing Christ.

The point though in the song is he is reflecting on just how awesome God really is.

Perhaps he should reflect by meditating on Scripture instead of writing trite songs that contradict Scripture.

I've read some okay things about that movie, even from secular reviewers. It sounds like it may say some good things about suffering, which is a topic Christians ought to be able to address with more substance than unbelievers can muster.

Still, I recoil at the thought of going to see it. This is probably unfair, but in my mind any "faith-based film" is bound to be unbearable cheesy if the movie poster contains either (1) a lens flare, (2) clouds, (3) an uplifted gaze, or (4) a soft dissolve. In this case, it looks like we're being served a quadruple cheese special.

I can only imagine how atrocious the Mary Magdalene film is since the Harvey Weinstein company's bankrupcy has derailed the movie's release in America.

Since commenting on this thread nearly three days ago, I have had the song stuck in my head. This probably serves me right for making a snarky post.

I actually love the song and movie. I don’t have a problem with the song.

We have glimpses of what heaven will be like, but when we get there, it will be nothing like we thought it would be like.

Bill, I don't mean to sound ignorant, but please lead me to a scripture that tells me. Is it from Revelation? Thanks!

Since I've never knowingly heard it, I don't have that problem.

I would suggest some Meatloaf or Debbie Harry as an antidote.

Annnnd now, I'm stuck with "I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you," rolling around in my head... :surrender:

Meatloaf theology...hmm.... "Two out three ain't bad." How does that convert to Calvinism? 3.3 Point Calvinism it seems.

I don't see anything wrong with the song. Is it wrong to write songs that don't quote Scripture verbatim? I don't think we should be so quick to condemn when there's nothing obviously doctrinally wrong with the song. This song has ministered to me in the past. As for Scripture, check out 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Great, now Meatloaf is gonna be stuck in my head (for the first time in 15 years?)

It would appear that Meatloaf has derailed the OP completely. Using this as an opportunity, however, I will petition our Admins for a new "smiley/emoji": a picture of a slice of meatloaf and a caption of "the artist formerly known as".

I would submit that it got derailed a long time before I jumped in. If you look at the original post, all of the responses could be edited to reflect a response of 'no'. Things started moving in other directions pretty close to the top of the thread.

While the mods usually police things pretty closely, they let what might have been a pretty short thread turn into a fun thread.

All in good fun, Edward! I will be pursuing the new emoji, however.....

By the way, how did Meatoaf pop into your head?:rofl:

One of the two top singers from the general area I could think of. I didn't think listening to Charlie Pride would work.
