Do we know why the confession lands on these three marks? Why not two or four or something completely different?

I am completely in agreement that true churches have these marks, but just curious what the thinking was behind these three marks.

Thanks

Hi Bob,

The Belgic Confession was influenced by a number of sources, but especially John Calvin. Calvin originally wrote of two marks, pure preaching and administration of the sacraments. But the French (or Gallican) Confession which he helped write mentioned three. The French Confession was the main model for the Belgic. You'll also find three marks in The Scotch Confession of 1560, and I believe others as well.
