A prayer for today: O Lord our gracious God, we confess that we have done much to displease you. Though we have not, perhaps, built idols in our homes and churches, we have built them in our hearts. We have trusted to our strength, our health, our money-earning capacity, as if we had control over all these things. Then an untoward event takes place. A job is lost. A storm destroys a house. An accident puts a loved one in the hospital, or in the grave. Suddenly, the world is out of our control and we are at sea. Bring us back, O Lord, to a childlike faith, to a daily remembering that you are God and we are not. Stir us up to look to your hand in all things, trusting ourselves and all that is ours into your care. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. (Psalm 123:1-2).
