This movie, scheduled for release in November, looks like it has potential: Beowulf. Looks like they leave in the supernatural, which is key. The secularization of this version is what has kept me from watching it.

The whole quasi Romance between Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie) and Beowulf. That is so not in the original text! While I grant that Angelina Jolie is probably more pleasant to look at than a troll, that is not a good portrayal of Grendel's mother.

They also make Hrothgar to appear weak and cowardly and maybe not a good guy. While it is true in the original he cannot stop Grendel, that does not necessitate the negative portrayal.
