Puritan Board Freshman
Hey all, I intend on studying all three Westminster Standards this upcoming winter break from college, as the break is 5 weeks long and I believe it will be a great use of my time away from school as a young Presbyterian man. What are the best resources and commentaries on the WCF, the WLC, and the WSC, respectively? If you all could, I would appreciate suggestions for all three standards individually, if that's possible.

(I already own Watson's "Body of Divinity" and Flavel's exposition on the Shorter Catechism in his collected works, if that helps refine your suggestions.)

The set of audio lectures by John Gerstner on the Westminster Confession of Faith is pretty good. You can find it through Ligonier Ministries under "Teaching Series."

For the WCF, I recommend Williamson and van Dixhoorn for entry level commentaries, Hodge and Shaw for next level. It is also useful to have Sproul's Truths We Confess. And don't forget Dickson's Truth's Victory Over Error. Fesko has a good, more historical commentary. I have heard great things about Beattie's commentary on the WCF as well, but I haven't used it, so I can't comment. On the WLC, there are only three commentaries on it in existence, as far as I am aware: J.G. Vos, Thomas Ridgeley (more of an ST based loosely on the order of the WLC), and Joe Morecraft (Authentic Christianity), now in a second edition. There are lots of commentaries on the WSC: Watson, Boston, Williamson, Fisher, Whyte, Vincent, Flavel.

Thank you guys so much for your helpful replies! For this first go-around, I will probably buy van Dixhoorn's commentary on the WCF and refer to Robert Shaw's online, will buy Vos' commentary on the Larger Catechism, and will use the various commentaries (Flavel, Henry, Vincent, Watson, Whyte) that the Bible Presbyterian Church's WSC Project has available. Will probably refer to Fisher's Catechism heavily as well. So excited to delve into the depths of the marrow of Presbyterian theology this winter!

Follow-up question: how would you guys recommend that I approach studying the standards? Should I read the chapters/questions and then study the prooftexts, followed by looking at commentaries, or is there another better way to do it? Would really appreciate advice on this!

I use The Westminster Larger Catechism: A Commentary by Johannes G. Vos
A great way to study the Larger and Shorter Catechisms is to study the Vos work along with Thomas Watsons 3 vol work on the Shorter Catechism
