I am looking for a good book on the history of music with a primary emphasis regarding God's people (Israel/Church) from the beginning of time to our current day. Any suggestions? (EP perspective or not, I am looking for a mainly historical perspective)

Thanks for any help!

You will probably find yourself reduced to a generalist text on music history such as A History of Western Music (Eighth Edition): J. Peter Burkholder,Donald Jay Grout,Claude V. Palisca: 9780393931259: Amazon.com: Books or else you will have to discover specialist tomes dealing with music of the first 10 centuries after Christ.

We have more than a dozen books in our library dealing with the history and practice of psalmody and hymnody (and scores of psalm books and hymnals). I think that a good place to start might be a recent book (2011) published by Fortress Press (Minneapolis), Christian Music : A Global History by Tim Dowley. Another, published by the same press in 1996, is The Story of Christian Music : From Gregorian Chant to Black Gospel, by Andrew Wilson-Dickson.

Grout is the standard single-volume history of Western music but these might be more useful for your purposes.

Peace,
Alan

Brothers, thank you for the suggestions. I have ordered most if not all of the books listed.
