I used to have a problem with historic confessions. My early opinion was that they took the place of scripture and those who quoted them were following the traditions of men. My how I have swallowed crow on that view! Today I am thankful for these confessions. As with any document of man, it is only relevant to the extent that it faithfully interprets scripture. They provide a means by which God's people can have unity in the truth. They protect from error and heresy. They are a means of loving church discipline when a person wanders from the truth of scripture. In short, they are a blessing.
