“Obedience unto death" was the absolutely unique priestly action of a Divine Person in human nature, competent only to a Divine Person, and morally possible to Him because, in human nature, he was the substitute of sinful men, offering himself a sacrifice to God, to satisfy divine justice for their sins.

Hugh Martin, The Shadow of Calvary: Gethsemane – The Arrest – The Trial (Edinburgh: Lyon & Gemmell, 1875), viii.

Hugh Martin's comments in the introduction of this book on "obedient to death" changed how I saw Christ's obedience. I think it was this very quote. I can't describe it--only wonder at it!
