I think I was in college when this story broke. i never really followed it closely but from what I recalled I always thought Richard Jewell was responsible....

In the haste to identify both heroes and villains (because heroes and villains always help a story), Mr. Jewell got jerked around in regrettable ways.

Interesting fact: I went to the college whose president (W. Ray Cleere) Jewell sued for defamation subsequent to this. In fact, I knew Cleere personally (he's since died) and have spent a small amount of time in his house on campus when I was a student.
