College Football Bowl Games -- The Playoffs!

Who says there aren't any playoffs in college football?!? That's exactly what we are going to have to finish up this season.

I am going to follow Andrew's suggestion and put all 32 bowls games as picks, with the BCS championship games as the tie-breaker (as well as a second tie-breaker). But first things first: this playoff is open to only those who won at least once in previous weeks. Anyone who won twice gets a +1 bonus to his final score (the number of bowls successfully picked). Here are my tallies:

Michael Turner -- 2
Romans922 -- 2
Tripel - 2
BackwoodsPresbyterian -- 1
Soonerborn -- 1
DD2009 -- 1
ColdSilverMoon -- 1
Chris Bryant -- 1
ReformedWretch -- 1
Hokie Airman -- 1

The competition will be open to those 10, plus one more: I'm going to put in Edward as a wildcard, because there was unclarity about the tie-breaker in the early weeks (and he didn't have a chance to pick an early game). So Edward, I'm including you in this as well, should you wish to participate.

If possible, let's have everyone's pick in by next Monday (December 14). I think the games start on the 18th. Feel free to change your picks up until that time as well.

To avoid clutter, I'll put all 32 up on the next post. In the meantime, enjoy this historic reminder of "playoffs."

Just to be clear, for the second tie-breaker, you only need to pick the conference with the best bowl record (according to winning percentage) -- you don't actually have to guess the percentage!

Are we able to change our picks up until the DAY BEFORE the actual bowl game? I know that might be confusing, but just wondering...

No. I want all picks (and changes) to be by 7 pm next Monday (December 14th). I'm entering everything in a spread sheet to keep track of all the games, and that's the day I have the most time to do it. It's too confusing to go back and change things at the last minute.

I'm gonna wait till Monday before I pick to see what starters get arrested this weekend for drunk driving, assault/battery, possession of a controlled substance, or whatever else first. :smug:

IMPORTANT; PLEASE READ

I did not realize until Saturday that there was another outstanding bowl bid: the Army/Navy game had to be played to determine whether Army was bowl-eligible (they were not not). Hence, the Eaglebank Bowl has been added in slot # 12 above (in the #2 post).

Those of you who have already made selections will need to go back and edit to add that one. I've edited the selection posts to place the bowl in with a ** to highlight it. Please select either UCLA or Temple to win. Don't worry about correcting numbers, etc. in the post, unless you especially want to.

Because of this oversight, I'm going to extend the selection deadline until Wednesday at 6 pm (ET). You may wait until then to either place or edit your selections if you so desire.

Pac-10 has a lot easier schedule for bowls in my opinion. Big 12 has the worst!

quick question, just for clarification we are doing the best winning percentage wins/games played (for second tie breaker), correct?

Yes, that is correct. You don't have to guess the percentage, just state which conference will have the highest percentage. For example, last year, I believe the PAC-10 went 6-0 while the SEC went 6-2. Even if the PAC-10 had gone 5-1, they still would have been the better performing of the two conferences (83.3% v. 75%).

I think there's an "award" (maybe just bragging rights) given to the best conference in bowl games. Essentially you are simply picking that winner (among the 6 major conferences -- no WAC or MAAC or SWAC or anything like that).

It's been a busy day...hope these picks are allowed in this late on Monday evening!

Quasi-bump

Don't forget that this is the last day to place your entries and edit your selection. If you have not added the Eaglebank Bowl selection to your entry, please do so!

I was going to yield to my betters and not participate, but I'll go ahead and embarrass myself in public. I missed out on the last one of the regular season (on the road again that week) but suffice it to say, I would NOT have been a contender.

1) New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State
2) St. Petersburg Bowl: Central Florida
3) New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss
4) Las Vegas Bowl: Oregon St.
5) Poinsettia Bowl: . Cal
6) Hawaii Bowl: SMU (Normally, the hometown team is a safe choice to lose, but don't count June out)
7) Little Caesars Bowl: Marshall
8) Meineke Car Care Bowl: North Carolina
9) Emerald Bowl: . USC
10) Music City Bowl: Kentucky
11) Independence Bowl: Georgia (expect the defense to finally show up)
12) Eaglebank Bowl: UCLA
13) Champs Sports Bowl: Wisconsin
14) Humanitarian Bowl: Bowling Green
15) Holiday Bowl: Nebraska
16) Armed Services Bowl: Air Force
17) Sun Bowl: Oklahoma

20) Chick-fil-A Bowl: Tennessee
21) Outback Bowl: Auburn
22) Gator Bowl: West Virginia
23) Capital One Bowl: LSU
24) Rose Bowl: Ohio St.
25) Sugar Bowl: Florida (blowout candidate)
26) International Bowl: South Florida
27) Papajohns.com Bowl: South Carolina (Isn't the opponent Div II or III)
28) Cotton Bowl: Ole Miss (may be one of the better games)
29) Liberty Bowl: Arkansas
30) Alamo Bowl: Texas Tech
31) Fiesta Bowl: TCU
32) Orange Bowl: Iowa
33) GMAC Bowl: Troy

Tie-breaker #1: National Championship game -- pick winner (only): Alabama (the real National Championship game was the SEC playoff)
Tie-breaker # 2: Major conference with the best bowl record (by win percentage): SEC

24) Rose Bowl: Oregon v. Ohio St.
30) Alamo Bowl: Texas Tech v. Michigan St.

But first things first: this playoff is open to only those who won at least once in previous weeks.

Doopsy!

Just for clarification, let me add one caveat to tie-breaker # 2 (should it come to that): if two (or more) folks make it to the second tie-breaker, and neither picks the winning conference, the one who picks the conference with the better record wins.

For example, say player A picks the SEC and player B picks the ACC. Say the PAC-10 has the best record, but the SEC has a 60% winning percentage while the ACC has only a 40%. The player who picked the SEC would win.

I don't think the tiebreaker rules are going to matter much to me this time...

Considering the head start that Backwoods already has (and in many ways, the earlier games are the "tougher" ones to pick because of the unfamiliarity of many of the teams), I don't think the tie-breakers will be an issue either!
