South Carolina fried chicken
Ole Miss black bears
Georgia Southern (the second best team in the state)
Texas Tech (despite the best efforts of the ESPN gang)
Georgia Dawgs (may be the best game of the week)
East Carolina (Who is the governor of East Carolina, anyway?)
Notre Dame (even if they are overrated again this year, they should be able to handle Temple)
Nebraska (the only question is whether Wyoming can keep it under three touchdowns)
Penn State (almost as painful as picking Notre Dame)
Iowa State - no comment
Colorado - and they need to enjoy it while they can
Northwestern ( I hope we aren't talking about Northwestern State)
Boise State
Louisiana State

It may not change your vote, but just to be clear, we are talking about Texas Tech in Lubbock, not the University of Texas in Austin.
Thanks for the clarification - as Lubbock was the birthplace of Buddy Holly I will stick with it.

I am going to take this seriously, otherwise I'm just wasting everyone's time. So if someone could give me a list of the leagues the games are picked from I will follow the scores and league tables: though I will always go with Boise!

Hey, we have my alma mater (Georgia Southern) in the mix! Go Eagles!

Hiccups of the First-time planner... I made a mistake in one matchup... Georgia Southern was indeed my intended game... but it isn't against Samford, it's against Savannah State.

Again, if you wish to revise your pick for that game, please do! It is Savannah State vs. Georgia Southern.

DOH!

It's my alma mater, I knew that, and I didn't even catch that. Suffice it to say, though, that the Statesboro High School team could probably show up and beat Savannah State.

Gulf Coast Presbyterian should be the only one who needs to change his pick.

Yes just about anyone should be able to beat Savannah State... When I selected this week's games, I was looking to pick Georgia Southern if it was a good matchup... and I quickly
passed over the list of games and thought I had seen Samford at Georgia Southern and thought - wow! On week 1? But ok, that may be a good game, let's go with it.

Then... ugh. Oh well, yes only GCP should have to change his pick.

So if someone could give me a list of the leagues the games are picked from I will follow the scores and league tables: though I will always go with Boise!

A lot of the games this week are warm-ups - the notable exception being Georgia - Clemson, and Boise State - Washington where strong teams from different conferences are playing.

The major conferences are SEC (the largest and most powerful overall, made up of 14 teams in the former Confederate States) the Pac 12, made up of western teams, The Big 10 (12 teams largely in the industrial Midwest), Big 12 (10 teams mostly between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains (with West Virginia thrown in through a forced marriage of convenience) usually historically dominated by the University of Texas and the two Oklahoma schools and the least stable of the majors) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (as its name suggests, generally located in the Atlantic coastal region). Conferences with 12 or more teams generally split into two sub-conferences and play an extra conference championship game at the end of the season. There are always strong teams in the weaker conferences which can beat mid-level teams in the stronger conferences. and there are a few independents left, the best known being Notre Dame (for football, in ACC for other sports) and Army although BYU (the Mormon university) and the Naval Academy are now independents, as well. There are 5 other conferences that are also classified as top tier, but which on the average are much weaker. And most of the teams in these ten conferences will also play at least one or two games against teams the next level down - usually paying the lesser team about $500,000 to take the beating.

You can see the team listings here NCAA College Football Conferences - ESPN and by clicking through, see how the teams are matching up through the season.

Does it bother anyone else that the Big Ten has 12 teams and the Big 12 has only 10 teams?

I gather one of them will soon have 14. As an Englishman, especially an English cricket fan, it seems perfectly reasonable that the names haven't changed as the numbers have, If i had more brain cells I would make a joke about essence or some such.
