The animals that dwell upon the earth are accounted the creatures of God's hand, and treated accordingly. It is a mark of a righteous man that he showeth mercy to his beast. All harsh and cruel conduct toward them will be conscientiously and scrupulously avoided; while care, and kindness, and tenderness will be manifested, for the sake of their Creator.

James Morgan, ‘The Fruit of the Spirit – Love’, Christian Miscellany, 1, no. 4 (22 January 1842), p. 28.

I like this post, as all your others. In a sense animals are useful for our survival but still God's creation so we ought to treat them as such. God "loaned" his creation to us.

We are not a family to post Bible verses all over the house, but my wife put this one up over the guinea pig cage several years ago, when our kids were young and "forgetful" about their cleaning and feeding chores. It survives to this day, now near the cat's litter box.

The same verse is displayed on the Calder Fountain in Belfast, which was a water fountain for animals built in honour Captain Francis A. Calder. He was a leading member of the Belfast Anti-Slavery Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (James Morgan was also associated with both organisations). Captain Calder was also a Presbyterian ruling elder.

Here are a few other links to sources on the same topic:
