It never really struck me before but how did they get a view of the three/four in the furnace?

I assume it was a viewing window to assess the process of lime making?

John Gill suggests it was a furnace such as was used to make lime. Would this have had steps cut in to climb down and remove the lime once the fire was out?

I also note that they were wearing hats! were these turbans or the Jewish marmulk (marmalade?)

Have you ever seen an incinerator? Usually at the bottom there is a big opening for the air to enter. You can see the base of the flames and whatever is burning easily from a safe distance.

Also, when I was working in Iraq years ago, I saw flaming bread ovens with brick ports that allowed you to slide the bread in. They also functioned as air inlets. You could see the flame and whatever was being baked quite readily.

I always envisioned that sort of set up. Old Neb was watching through some large air intake port most likely.
