It is worth noting that while Luther was, clearly, a strict soteriological monergist, he always affirmed something of a disconnect between the 'vertical' and 'horizontal' operations of the human will (those terms are mine, not his).

That is to say, Luther believed that the human will was actually free when it came to decisions having to do with everyday life and that, in fact, the only place where it was actually enslaved was in this matter of salvation.
