I've always thought of it as referring to all the countries on the bottom of the Earth.
Directly below the South Island is another unnamed Island, Stuart Island. Thus Tasmania could be renamed "The Island of Tasmania, New Zealand ".How did Tasmania become the "West Island"?
Antarctica is at the bottom of the earth. Actually New Zealand is more correctly known as "Middle Earth "I've always thought of it as referring to all the countries on the bottom of the Earth.
