Sharing these two videos, where Pastor Patrick Hines critiques a "sermon" on the Cross by EO priest, theologian, and author Thomas Hopko.

Hopko's views on the Cross are on full display in his sermon, and Pastor Hines takes him to the proverbial woodshed! And Hopko's views are also the dominant view today in EO, who almost all hold that Penal Substitutionary Atonement is .... wait for it:

"A Western Heresy invented by Anselm!!"

Enjoy.

Eastern Orthodoxy's View of the Cross with Thomas Hopko, Part 1
Eastern Orthodoxy's View of the Cross with Thomas Hopko, Part 2

Money quote from Part 1: "This man's (Hopko's) understanding of Christianity, his understanding of the Christian faith, can be what it is had Jesus of Nazareth never lived, died, or rose from the dead."

I was listening to a Hopko quote on Toll Houses and he came close to saying that a person who converted but was martyred before baptism might not make it to heaven.

Perhaps topics relating to reformed teaching might be of greater value in this forum?

Are you referring to the videos? Because Pastor Hines does explain the Reformed understanding of the Cross and how the EO position espoused by Thomas Hopko is a complete rejection of that understanding.

Agreed. Or it could be seen as apologetics.
