I've decided that one of my major reading projects for this year will be to read through the new 10th edition of the Norton Anthology of English Literature - all six volumes (amounting to several thousand pages). The first edition was published in 1962.

So, I'm in Volume A ("The Middle Ages") and I've just finished the first 661 lines of Beowulf, in the late Irish poet Seamus Heaney's 1999 translation. The fight against Grendel is about to begin.

The six volumes:

Volume A - "The Middle Ages"
Volume B - "The Sixteenth Century/The Early Seventeenth Century"
Volume C - "The Restoration and the Eighteenth Century"
Volume D - "The Romantic Period"
Volume E - "The Victorian Age"
Volume F - "The Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries"

This is going to be an interesting journey this year.

It wasn't six volumes when I was young. Of course, there wouldn't have been content for what now makes up the bulk of volume F.

I think, for this new 10th edition, that they originally intended for it to be in 7 volumes, with a volume devoted entirely to the 18th century. Instead, they split the 18th century between volumes 2 and 3, if I remember rightly.
