"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." (ESV)
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:" (KJV)
I've quoted both ESV and KJV to (hopefully) eliminate any discussion about wording. What I'm interested in knowing is does a "carved" or "graven" image include a God we've created in our own heads to suite our own needs or is it more specific in that it refers to physical statues?"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:" (KJV)
