For as soon as we reflect on the deeds of those who live good lives, we pass judgment on ourselves in our profound embarrassment. Soon feelings of shame assail our mind, soon a rightfully harsh accusation is levied upon us, and we are even sorely displeased with our disgraceful behaviour, which perhaps we still find pleasurable.

Gregory the Great, Excerpts from the Works of Gregory the Great on the Song of Songs. Compiled by Paterius and Bede (1705) in Gregory the Great on the Song of Songs (594-98), trans. Mark DelCogliano (Collegeville MN: Liturgical Press, 2012), p. 168.

@bookslover will be worried about me starting a cult with all these quotes from Gregory. ;)
