Gaze, as you have begun to do, with the greatest intensity of your heart, upon our Lord Jesus Christ; detach yourself entirely from all empty pomp; mount up to Him who comforts with more than words those who turn to Him, and places those who strive to climb up with the steps of faith on the eternal heights of heavenly and angelic honour.

Augustine of Hippo, ‘Letter 112 to Victorian, c. 409-10’ in Letters: Volume II (c. 405-12), trans. Wilfred Parsons, The Fathers of the Church: A New Translation, 18 (New York: The Fathers of the Church, 1953), p. 255.
