George Formby (1904-1961) was one of the most popular British entertainers of the 20th century. His heyday was the mid-'30s through the mid-'50s. He appeared in about 100 films, and was known for his singing and his ukelele playing. He also played a "banjolele" - a sort of cross between a banjo and a uke. The late George Harrison was reportedly a big fan.

His songs were lighter than air (with the occasional double-entendre), but he was very entertaining. Here's an example:
