More and more I find I love secular days of celebration. The Fourth has become one of two days we get together as an extended family each year (or, as happens with older kids, the closest day we can make it work). My pictures from previous years with parades and fireworks always bring a big smile to my face. And who doesn't love an excuse to eat a pile of red meat and drink Philadelphia-brewed beer?

Happy Independence Day! Sic semper tyrannis!

Happy Independence day! I'm glad that I can still celebrate without shame, because it's not a day to celebrate what we've become, but what great principles and actions made us into a nation in the first place. May the Lord bless us with the mercy and grace we so desperately need!

We read the Declaration of Independence together, lit sparklers, and sang the national anthem. I explained that we don't need to agree or disagree with everything in it, snd that we don't need to be ashamed to be Americans but should be thankful to be such without endorsing everything about our founding. Our oldest daughter has a little story book about Jeremiah, so I explained to her that much like in those times, our country is rejecting God and we need to pray for it to turn back to him or we will face his judgment. I then prayed briefly to that effect.
