iPod touch volume question

New iPod touch user here. I pose this question because I haven't seen it addressed in the manuals:

Today for most of the day the side volume buttons and the volume buttons on the earphones had little control over the volumes and did not sync with the volume slider. While it gave more steps in the loudness range, it did not sync with the volume slider on screen (it almost wouldn't move at all...like it was somewhat locked). Now, about 30 minutes ago, both the side controls and the headphones control the volume completely and the slider volume on the screen moves in unison with both.

What would cause this to go "in and out"? Make sense?

Is there a locked volume limit on your device?

Settings --> Music --> Volume Limit

I've had issues like that when the headphones weren't plugged in all the way. Sometimes it looks like they are in, but they are slightly off.

Yep, my Ipod Shuffle is like that, too.
