I've just heard Iris DeMent's new CD, The Trackless Woods. (DeMent, born in 1961, is an American singer and songwriter in the folk/country mode.) The CD consists of 18 new songs DeMent has written, setting to music 18 poems by the Russian poet, Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966). Ahkmatova was a Russian poet of Ukrainian extraction who, as you can tell by her dates, survived the cruelties and brutalities of the Stalin regime (as did the classical composer, Dimitri Shostakovich [1906-1975]).
The album was recorded mostly in DeMent's Iowa City, Iowa living room (and the sound is excellent and professionally recorded). The guitarist Leo Kottke is among the supporting musicians. It'll take more listening to fully absorb it, but I highly recommend it. It's available at www.amazon.com. See also www.irisdement.com.
