Okay, I just did a search and read a couple older threads on the issue. Great stuff.

I guess what I'm looking for is whether the IUD is basically an Abortion - i.e. disabling a fertilized egg.

I've done a Google search but am coming up with contradictory info - anybody know a trustworthy site? [/quote:3b7585682e]

All I can say on this is that my wife had an appointment to get an IUD after our son was born. Because the her car would not start, she missed the appointment. Learning that the IUD prevents the fertilized egg from implanting, she never made a new appointment.

9:9,

My understanding is that an IUD's purpose is to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching, which would make it an abortificant. I have also heard that IUDs can cause scarring in the uterus and therefore might make it difficult for a woman to conceive later on (when she wants to). That information comes from our "health" class in high school.

The IUD is a device that makes the lining of the uterus unexceptable to a fertilized egg. It prohibits implantation of the egg, thereby making a viable pregnancy improbable if not impossible. No, I am not medical personnel, but I asked my OB-GYN specifically how the IUD worked and he respected me enough to tell me.

In these days of vociferous pro-lifers, the medical association has changed the explanation of how the IUD works to make it a more palatable method of birth control. I find that dishonest and obscene. You probably found it said that the IUD makes the movement of sperm and fertilization of an egg more difficult. I find that laughable due to the fact that the IUD is implanted into the uterus and fertilization of the egg occurs the majority of the time in the fallopian tube.

Haha - I BEAT YOU!!

Just kidding. Actually, your response was much more thorough than mine anyway. HS was a loooong time ago. It was a funny class though. The teacher would tell us all about "X" form of birth control, it's x% effective, yadda yadda, "and the Catholic Church's official teaching is that birth control is a mortal sin." It was a thoroughly enjoyable semester. The class was actually titled "Conscience Formation." No, I'm not kidding.

Mary :D
