Puritan Board Junior
Hello everyone, was linking some Puritans today from EEBO-TCP, and came across a person by the name of John Scott, defined as a Puritan by PRTS's Puritan Search, https://prts.edu/researchtools/#/puritans/ . I see that he has a 5 volume work entitled "The Christian Life" and it looks like it is a Systematic Theology type of book. Was just wanting to make this work known to the publishers on here, as of all the Puritan works I have linked, it is rare to find something so multi-voluminous by them. Might be a work that has been potentially overlooked. Any info on this work would be appreciated too. The links to those works are below, and since they are typed up, it would make for easier editing as opposed to the facsimiles copying. This will be part of the automated correction process, but just wanted to throw these out here for anybody interested.

Seems like a conformist Anglican. What's your dividing line as to who is and is not a puritan?
Since I am no expert, I heavily rely on experts in the field. This name was taken from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminaries list of Puritans https://prts.edu/researchtools/#/puritans/ . My personal definition of a Puritan is those looking to reform the CoE, but in a broader sense, Non-Conformists from the year 1550-1700 that dont overtly include Brownists, Quakers, Pilgrims, or Papists, I think there is some wiggle room regarding some Separatists, because I think many which became Pilgrims, or Brownists, and of what I understand, they almost all started as Puritans but thought salvaging the national church was useless, and of course, the early Baptists like John Bunyan and Benjamin Keach.

The Index I am working on relies solely on the expert opinion of others; APM, PRDL, DNB, suggestions from here, PRTS, Beeke and Pedersons "Meet the," Brooks 3 vol. "Lives of," Lyons 3 vol. "N-C under Persecution, and Calamys 2 vol. "N-C Memorial." I am no way personally qualified to start defining Puritans. Like yesterday I was linking more people for the Index, and came across a person on none of the lists so far to my knowledge "Robert Coachman/Cushman" but again, he is listed as a Puritan in "Worldly Saints" by Leland Ryken.

So far, from all the above mentioned sources, these are the Puritan/Non-Conformists I have found works on EEBO-TCP so far for the Index; which is the main reason I am searching for them.

I still have to finish searching Calamy and Lyons. One of my ultimate goals is that they all get exposure; not just the same 20 or 30 you usually hear talked about in most forums. No shade, but if they can be brought into the open, instead of buried in history; all the better.

"Puritan" seems questionable, but at least some of his writings did make it into Gibson's Preservative Against Popery.

And that's really the consensus I have to accept; that is, there seems to be no definitive list of Puritans among experts in their own right. Some would say Bunyan isnt a Puritan because he was Baptist, some would say Edwards is the last, and others he isnt because he lived too late. Some say Puritanism is confined to a historical period, others say its a "spirit of Puritanism" and will include people like Spurgeon, Lloyd-Jones, and Packer. Some would say it is only those who wished to reform the C of E, others, like Geree would include Non-Conformists in general as Puritans. That is why I am letting the experts define them for me, and if PRTS say hes a Puritan, its good enough for me. :)

I found a little bit about him online:

"John Scott, a learned divine, was born in the parish of Chippingham, in Wiltshire, in 1638, and, not being intended for a literary profession, served an apprenticeship in London, much against his will, for about three years, when he went to Oxford, where he was admitted a commoner of New Inn in 1657; but he left the university without taking a degree, and being ordained, came to London, where he officiated in the perpetual curacy of Trinity in the Minories, and as minister of St. Thomas's in Southwark. In 1677 he was presented to the rectory of St. Peter Le Poor, in Old Broad-street; and was collated to a prebend in St. Paul's cathedral in 1684. In 1685 he accumulated the degrees of bachelor and doctor in divinity. In 1691 he succeeded Sharp, afterwards archbishop of York, in the rectory of St. Giles-in-the-Fields; and in the same year he was made canon of Windsor. He died in 1694, and was buried in St. Giles's church. When Popery was encroaching under Charles II and James II, he was one of those champions who opposed it with great warmth and courage, particularly in the dedication of a sermon preached at Guildhall chapel, Nov. 5, 1683, to Sir William Hooker, lord mayor of London, in which he declares that "Domitian and Dioclesian were but puny persecutors and bunglers in cruelty, compared with the infallible cut-throats of the apostolical chair." His principal work is The Christian Life. The first part was published 1681, 8vo, with this title, "The Christian Life, from its beginning to its consummation in Glory, together with the several means and instruments of Christianity conducing there unto, with directions for private devotion and forms of prayer, fitted to the several states of Christians;" in 1685 another part, "wherein the fundamental principles of Christian duty are assigned, explained, and proved;" in 1686 another part, "wherein the doctrine of our Saviour's mediation is explained and proved." He published also Examination of Bellarmine's Eighth Note concerning Sanctity of Doctrine; The Texts Examined, which Papists cite out of the Bible concerning Prayer in an Unknown Tongue; Certain Cases of Conscience resolved, concerning the lawfulness of joining with Forms of Prayer in public worship; A Collection of Cases and other Discourses lately written to recover Dissenters to the Communion of the Church of England, 1685, 4to. All his works were published in 2 vols, fol, 1704."

An interesting note is found in Athenæ Oxonienses. Vol. 2

“John Scot of New Inn.—This learned Divine, who is not yet mentioned in these Fasti, because he took no degree in Arts, or in any other faculty, hath published divers books of Divinity (some of which were against Popery in the Reign of K. Jam. 2.) and therefore he is hereafter to crave a place among the Oxford Writers.”
