Does anyone own J. B. Lightfoot's Apostolic Fathers set? Is this something for seminary or college level students or can the common man like myself benefit from it?

It is a handy set. It is scholarly. You would probably find much that would benefit you in the set.

How does this set differ from what is available from www.ccel.org in their Ante-Nicene Fathers? Also freely available via eSword is the Apostolic Fathers. These are not the same works?

It differs in that it provides the Greek text on the left page with the corresponding English translation on the right page, which I find very helpful. The latter part of one of these Epistles by Polycarp (to the Philippians) is preserved apparently only in Latin. But most of this epistle is preserved in Greek as well.
