I highly recommend Ned Stonehouse's biography of Machen that he wrote in 1954. 507 pages of fascinating prose (Stonehouse is an excellent writer) and information you cannot get anywhere else on the founder of Westminster Seminary and the stalwart of the Reformed Faith.

I found an original 1st Edition on Amazon for $5.00 but you can buy it new from Westminster Books at this link.

For instance did you know J. Gresham Machen was an accomplished mountain climber?

For those who are interested in audio, the Reformed Forum website is currently doing a biographical series on Machen as part of the program, Historia Ecclesia. The series is taught by Dr. Darryl Hart at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Glenside, PA.

I found this interesting and amusing from his letters:

And an ironic comment in H.L. Mencken's obituary for Dr. Machen:
"Dr. Machen himself was to [William Jennings] Bryan as the Matterhorn is to a wart."
