Marcus Friedrich Wendelin's "Christian Theology"

God governs rational creatures in two ways: 1. By His Providence; and, 2. By His Law.

Wendelin explains...

It seems that Christians either obsess over Angels, or neglect them altogether.

Wendelin introduces his study on Angels, which strikes the Biblical balance!

Jonathan Edwards once observed that, even if the Bible had not given us a historical record of the Fall, we would suppose some sort of corruption at the root of mankind, given man's universal sinfulness.

Wendelin takes an unflinching look at the Fall and its consequences.

Is the sin of Adam merely a bad example for his children? or did it do some sort of deeper violence to man's nature?

Wendelin previews for us his treatment of the Doctrine of Original Sin.

What effect did Adam's sin have on his posterity? Is he merely a bad example? or is there something more?

Wendelin explores the teaching of Scripture...

What a person believes concerning man's fallen nature will shape what he believes concerning Redemption.

Wendelin returns to the Doctrine of Original Sin...

Having considered the corruption of Man's nature by the Fall, Wendlin turns his attention to the actual sins produced by that corrupt nature.

Here, he provides an outline of the coming study...

Having considered Original Sin, Wendelin now turns his attention to Actual Sin.

Note: There is an interesting section on the Unforgiveable Sin near the end.

What punishment is due to sin?

The answer to that question provides insight into what Christ did for His people on Calvary's cross.

Wendelin introduces his study on the punishment of sin...

Thanks be to God that He did not abandon mankind in the state of Sin and Misery, but provided the Savior Christ to atone for sin!

Our beautiful Jesus...

Wendelin previews for us his introductory study to God's Post-Fall Providence towards men and angels.

Thanks be to God!

Westminster Shorter Catechism 20: Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?

Answer: God having, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a Redeemer.

With heaviness we have contemplated the Fall.

Now, the joy of beholding the Savior!

Wendelin continues in his description of our beautiful Jesus.

Here, he introduces us to his study of the causes of the Personal Union...

What grace! What love!

The Eternal Son has taken our nature! for our Redemption!

Can the properties of Christ's divine nature be communicated to His human nature?

This was a point of sore conflict between the Lutherans and the Reformed. Wendelin gives us a preview of his analysis...

Wendelin was a German Reformed theologian, living in a polemical context with the Lutherans. The next section on the communicatio idiomatum is lengthy and heavily detailed. It should be ready in about a week.

In the meantime, the course page is up-to-date.

I'm sorry: this next section is taking forever. In relation to the rest of his system, Wendelin's treatment of the communicatio idiomata is disproportionately large. Given his context, this makes sense.

I hope to have it posted by next week...
