For those who may be interested, former Prime Minster of England Margaret Thatcher's address to the 1988 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has been posted here, in its entirety (it's currently the second post from the top, entitled "O For the Days When Politicians Did God"): Cranmer.

Can you imagine an American politician being so literate when it comes to Christianity?

Unless God moves, we will never see the like again. She was the greatest Prime Minister since the war, and her bold economics saved our country. We need her again, now. The socialists have half ruined all she achieved.

Wow.

I get the distinct impression that no speech writer or handler wrote that speech. It rings with a directness and clarity that is rarely heard today. . . from any politician, save a few who are actually statesmen.

We must pray (and be involved) to see we have godly, competent civil leadership.

Well the R2K crowd would be not be too keen on having anyone rule with an explicitly Christian mindset. Natural Law before God's Law in the "Public" arena.

But that is another discussion for another thread.

By the way is Mrs. Thatcher C of E?

For those who may be interested, former Prime Minster of England...

Excuse me but if I can just clear up a little point of some delicacy: she was most definitely not prime minister of England but of the United Kingdom!

Although I was never a supporter of Margaret Thatcher I have always admired her. Indeed I have to confess that during the 1983 election I actually voted for the Conservatives. Something I have kept secret up till now never having owned up to it before. (Well, it was either that or Michael Foote.)

I would have to concede that next to Churchhill she probably was the greatest prime minister of the 20th century. I admired her strength in standing up against the trade unions and the miners in particular. She showed immense strength to stand up to the Ulster Unionists which was a continued failing of British governments until she came on the scene. It will be a long time before we see the likes of her again.

she truly was the iron Lady and I can't see anyone that could dare to give a similar speech to now seemingly and largely pagan UK. Britain is in a dire need of such a Conservative and Christian.

Yes, the second-raters and leftists leading the so-called Conservatives today make one distinctly nostalgic for Mrs T!

Do you think the natural law advocates in the Reformed camp believe that it comes from any source other than God? He was the creator wasn't he?

This came from somebody who was once in a bible study with the Iron Lady. Commenting on the parable of the Good Samaritan Mrs. T was said to have observed that "he had money".

I don't believe the Church of Scotland has remained close to its roots, or that Pelagianism and Arminianism form key beliefs of Christianity; but the following quotation has pinpointed what is wrong with modern democracy:

But there is little hope for democracy if the hearts of men and women in democratic societies cannot be touched by a call to something greater than themselves. Political structures, state institutions, collective ideals—these are not enough.
